What Is a Fair Salary in India? A City-Wise Guide by Experience, Skills, and Real Life

A "fair salary" in India is not just about what a company offers. It is about whether your income matches your experience, your skills, and the city you live in.

The same ₹8 lakh package can feel decent in one city and tight in another. A person with 5 years of basic support experience should not be compared with someone who has 5 years in cloud, AI, analytics, or product roles. And a fresher in Lucknow does not face the same monthly pressure as a mid-level employee in Mumbai or Bengaluru.

That is why fair salary should be judged on three things: city, experience, and knowledge.

Recent labour data shows why this matters. India's average monthly earnings for regular salaried workers are still modest overall, while market pay rises sharply for people with in-demand skills. Hiring has been expanding beyond big metros into Tier-2 cities — which means "fair salary" is now more location-sensitive than ever.

The first truth: salary is not the same as fairness

A salary is simply what you are paid.

A fair salary is what allows you to:

  • ✓ Run your monthly life without constant stress
  • ✓ Save something every month
  • ✓ Handle rent and commute in your city
  • ✓ Build a future instead of only surviving
  • ✓ Get rewarded for real knowledge, not just years on paper

That last point is becoming more important. IT, technology, BFSI, healthcare, AI, cloud engineering, data analytics, and cybersecurity continue to command stronger compensation than many legacy functions.

What the market is telling us in 2026

Three broad shifts are visible in India's salary market.

First, skills are getting paid more aggressively than tenure alone. Python, SQL, cloud, data analysis, full-stack development, data engineering, cloud architecture, AI/ML, and DevOps remain among the most sought-after capabilities.

Second, city premiums still exist, but they are changing. Bengaluru remains a strong metro hiring hub, while Tier-2 cities — Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Kochi, Jaipur, Vadodara, and Chandigarh — are seeing growth.

Third, living costs are forcing people to rethink what "good salary" means. Current city cost data shows estimated monthly costs for a single person (excluding rent) at roughly:

Mumbai

₹36,700

per month*

Delhi

₹34,500

per month*

Bengaluru

₹32,600

per month*

Pune

₹33,700

per month*

Hyderabad

₹32,100

per month*

Lucknow

₹27,100

per month*

*Single person, excluding rent

A simple way to define fair salary

The Fair Salary Formula

Fair salary = survival salary + city premium + skill premium + growth premium

  • Survival salary — covers rent, food, commute, bills, and basic social life.
  • City premium — reflects where you live.
  • Skill premium — reflects what you know and how hard you are to replace.
  • Growth premium — what lets you save, invest, and move ahead.

That means fair salary is never one national number. Want to know where you personally stand? Use our free Salary Fairness Checker — it takes your job, city, experience, and company type into account.

Experience matters. But knowledge matters more.

In India, many people still think salary should rise mainly with years worked. That is no longer fully true.

Someone with AI/ML deployment knowledge, cloud architecture skills, data engineering exposure, advanced Excel + SQL + BI capability, strong digital marketing with analytics, or cybersecurity knowledge can reasonably earn more than someone with more years but weaker relevance.

That is exactly where many salary discussions become emotional. One person says, "I have 8 years of experience." The market asks, "Yes, but 8 years of what?"

Three quick stories that explain fair salary better than any formula

Story 1: Rohan in Mumbai

Rohan has 4 years in general operations and earns ₹7.8 lakh a year. On paper, that sounds respectable. In reality, rent, transport, food delivery, and occasional family support leave him with almost nothing at month-end. Is he underpaid? Not necessarily in a raw market sense. But for Mumbai, his salary is not truly fair if it leaves no room for savings or emergencies.

Story 2: Neha in Jaipur

Neha has 5 years in performance marketing — Meta ads, Google Ads, dashboards, creatives, funnels, and reporting. She earns ₹11 lakh a year in Jaipur. Compared with local averages, she is paid well. Compared with a similar skill profile in Bengaluru, she may still be under market. Her city helps, but her knowledge is what really drives her value.

Story 3: Arvind in Bengaluru

Arvind has just 3.5 years of experience, but he works in cloud and data engineering. He earns more than some 7-year professionals in traditional IT support. Why? Because the market is paying for scarcity and business relevance, not just age or tenure.

So what salary is unfair?

A salary starts becoming unfair when:

  • ✗ It does not cover basic living costs in your city
  • ✗ There is no realistic room for savings
  • ✗ Your knowledge level is clearly above your pay band
  • ✗ Your company keeps replacing revised pay with titles
  • ✗ Your compensation is disconnected from the revenue, risk, or responsibility you handle

A person can be "employed" and still be underpaid. That is a bigger issue than most companies admit.

A better way for employers to think

For companies, fair salary is not charity. It is strategy. Underpaying people creates silent damage: weaker retention, low trust, hidden disengagement, fake stability, and poor-quality execution.

Paying fairly does not mean paying the highest number in the market. It means paying enough for the city, enough for the role, and enough for the knowledge that creates business value. That is how teams stay.

Final word

There is no single fair salary in India. There is only a fair salary for your city, your experience, and your knowledge.

In 2026, that is the lens that matters. A fresher in a Tier-2 city, a mid-level manager in Hyderabad, and a cloud engineer in Bengaluru should not be judged by the same benchmark.

Experience gets you considered. Knowledge gets you paid. City decides how far that salary actually goes.
